Rain Flower Terrace

The Rain Flower Terrace (Yuhuatai) is located south of the Zhonghua Gate in Nanjing. It is a hillock with beautiful scenery, about 100 meters high and more than 3,000 meters long.

The Rain Flower Terrace is also called the Agate Hillock. It produces lots of colorful agate stones, additionally the top of the hillock is like a platform, so local people like to call it "the Rain Flower Terrace". The name is related with a beautiful legend.

Allegedly, in Nanchao Dynasty the Yunguang Master placed a table to speak scriptures on top of the hill, this moved the God, the heaven fell flowers like rain, these flowers became beautiful and colorful little stones and scattered the whole hillock, so this is how the Rain Flower Terrace got its name.

The Rain Flower Terrace is the highest spot of south of Nanjing. The topography is dangerous. Far from South and North Dynasty of Wei, here was the place that armed forces had to conflict to get. In late year of Ming Dynasty, after the Peace Heaven chose Nanjing as their capital, they once fought with Qing Dynasty here for several years.

In late of Qing Dynasty, the armed forces of the Revolution of 1911 once used the natural topography of the Rain Flower Terrace to beat the soldiers of Qing Dynasty. When two sides were fighting, they also had casualties, so now on top of the hillock there still preserved two tombs of dead soldiers, providing people to show respect.

The topography of the Rain Flower Terrace is high, so it is the best place to climb high and appreciate the scenery of Nanjing, meanwhile it is also the scenic spot people like deeply.

Here the beautiful agate stones like rain flowers are full of the ground, shining and glittery, too beautiful to be absorbed all at once. On east hill of the Rain Flower Terrace, there is a spring stream and an exquisite rockery. The spring water is so clear that you can see the bottom and the taste is sweet.

When the famous literati Luyou was an officer in Song Dynasty, he once drank the tea cooked with spring, after drinking, he praised highly to this spring stream and called it "the second spring in south of the Yangtze River".

So today the quiet and elegant teahouse is built on the Rain Flower Terrace, it can let visitors taste rain flower tea cooked with spring after appreciating the scenic spots.

The Yu Hua Tai, Nanjing is located in an area that is covered by artificial forest. It covers an area of 86.87 hectares of land. The special point here is the group of statues that are massive in size. Just behind lies one of the execution grounds. There is also a Monument established in the memory of the revolutionary martyrs along with a Mao Ze Dong's inscription in calligraphy: "Long Live the Martyrs!" that stands on the highest peak of the mountain

Rain Flower Pebbles--Museum of Rain Flower Pebbles.

Rain Flower Pebbles is a kind of special local product of Nanjing. It shows particular aesthetic value by it's glittering and tranaslucent texture, rich color, wonderful veins, and lively appearance. It's a national treasure given by God and the absolute of China.

The architecture of Nanjing Museum of Rain Flower Pebbles is the ancient site of Gaozuo Temple. It keeps the ancient China art of architecture--red balustrade, soaring eaves, and the connected zig-zag cloister. And it has been repaired in 2002. This museum is the sole professional museum which collects and researches Rainny Agate. It has five sections: Entity, Intention, Pleasure, Leisure, and Road of Stone Derivation. The five sections, integrated with gimmicky combination of sound, light, and electicity, display plently of marvellous Rain Flower Pebbles and pictures with literal interpretations. ON the crude Rainny Agate you could admire many customs, ruralities, personalities and animals and plants. One of the marvellous stone in this museum are awarded the first, second and third class in Shanghai 1st Display of Stone Cllections From Celebrities. And this stone has been taken to the 24th Seoul Olympic Games as the "Peace Lucky Stone" by the delegation of China. It has been admired by many spectators from many nations. Buying Rain Flower Stones
 
The main store for purchasing Rain Flower Stones is located in the eastern part of the park.  The stones vary wildly in price from under 10 yuan to over 1000 yuan.  The stone’s value increases if:

  • The stones are more finely grained. 
  • The stones look like something.  For example, a pattern that looks similar to a flower would be worth more than one that doesn't look like anything.
  • The colors are particualrly vibrant.
Despite these general indications of price, it is impossible for anybody except a true expert to assess the actual value of a Rain Flower Stone.
 
Park Layout
 
The Martyrs Museum is located near the south entrance of the park.  Directly in front of the north entrance is the Statue of Martyrs.  On the east side is a variety of smaller attractions including the Rain Flower Stone “Museum” (store) and Yuhua Pavilion.  To the west is a small amusement park for children which includes an additional 5 yuan entrance fee.
 
How to Get There
The Rain Flower Terrace East near Yuhua Road East, Ning Li River Highway, South title weft eight-way, Yuhuatai Square, the west by the Communist Youth League Road, North arrived in Yuhuatai East, West Road junction, Nanjing South Station. From the Lukou International Airport, the Shanghai-Nanjing expressway, more than 10 minutes by car, traffic is very convenient.
 
Rain Flower Terrace is located along the western edge of Yuhua Dong Lu  and the northern edge of Yuhua Nan Lu   
 
To reach the north entrance of the park via the subway, get off at Zhonghua Men  station. Then exit from the south side of the station and walk a couple blocks east along Yuhua Xi Lu 
 
There are many buses that go straight to the south and north entrance of the park.
 
If you were to come by bicycle it is important to note that there are train tracks just north of the park.  If you are coming from the north and do not want to ride in a huge circle, you should carry your bike up a few flights of stairs to cross the bridge next to Zhonghua Men subway station.
