                                            Gyantse

Gyantse, at an altitude of 3950, 260km southwest of Lhasa and 98km southeast of Shigatse, is the third largest town in Tibet, most famous for its stunning KumBum, a place of great religious and artistic reverence and importance.

For most visitors to the Tibet Autonomous Region, the name Gyantse does not bring a familiar ring as compared with larger cities like Lhasa, Nyingchi, Yadong and Xigaze.But the minor city is a firmly written chapter in Tibet's modern history.


Gyantse is a small town south west of Lhasa. It is one of the few places where the Chinese have not changed much. Gyantse is known because of its Fortress, the Dzong, a very special building ,the Kimbum, and a monastery, the KumbumPelkor Chode. The reason why people build a town there is because of the trade in wool. The location was good because Gyantse was on the road to India. Nowadays it is close to the Friendship Highway. This is a road that literally makes its name true. It is a road that runs at a height of approximate 3500 m above sea level. But for the rest it does not look like a highway as we know it. It is a sandy road that now and than turns out to be jammed because of erosion. The Dzong Fort is build on a hill. You can visit it but than you must walk.

Nestled in the mountains of Gyantse town lies in the south of the Tibet Autonomous Region. A 4040 meters above sea level, it covers an area of 4.5 square meters and has a population of about 10,000. It was as a historical and cultural by the State Council.

Gyantse is the pinnacle of success in the Tibetan language. Since the Nianchu River flows through it, the Gyantse Nian was. The old town of Gyantse has a history of six to seven years. Because it is the place that people need to Shakya, Shigatse and Yangdong passport in Lhasa, and vice versa, and many products, Gyantse has long been the meeting place for Buddhists, tourists and businessmen, and enjoy a great reputation in Tibet.

Palkor The monastery is a symbol of the architecture of Gyantse, and it is known as One Hundred Thousand-Buddha Tower. Built in the period in which the various sects stood one to the other, and Nip Tuck, the monastery is the peaceful coexistence of these sects, each six to seven.

On one side of the Palkor Monastery is a white, this is known and widely throughout the world. It is 32 meters high, with 108 goals and 77 niches. It is said that a total of more than 100,000 Buddha statues at the tower, where the name "One Hundred Thousand-Buddha Tour."

Gyantse is rich in local and benefit. It makes sense that the title "city of heroes. Rongbuk Monastery    The Rongbuk Monastery, located on Mt. Everest, is the highest monastery in the world, with an elevation of about 5,200 meters, almost the same height as the base camp of Mt. Everest.


Yamdrok Lake With in the boundary of Nankartse, the Yamdrok Lake covers an area of 800 sq. km. with 4400 m above sea level. Yamdrok means the upper pastureland and "Tso" means sea in Tibetan. When overlooking the Yamdrok Tso Lake, it may be thought as if a gigantic sapphire inland in a surrounding of mountains, which look extremely beautifu

Transportation

No direct bus from Lhasa to Gyantse, the easiest way is via Shigatse,which gives you the chance to get a travel permit first. Minibuses leave every 30 minutes outside the bus station in Middle Liberty Road in Shigatse, Y20 / 77km /2hrs.

From Gyantse, you can go eastward to Lhasa or Shannan, northward to Shigatse(minibuses to Shigatse available at the main crossing), westward to Tingri via Gangba and Tingjie, southward to Yatung, a frontier port, via the beautiful Yadung Gully across the Himalayas.
