Located in southeast Jilin, the Changbai Mountains extends continuously and waving toward north of Chaoxian peninsula. Baitou Mountain, its main peak, reaches 2700 km, and is the highest the peak in northeast of China. They are covered by snow for years. Because of the gray or white rocks, the mountains are called Changbai(long and white) Mountains.
As great in shape, Mt. Changbai becomes the source of Songhuajiang River, Tumenjiang River and Yalujiang River and also wins title of huge mountain and continuous river.

Changbai Mountains were volcanoes in far ancient days. After eruption great amount of lava sprayed out forms cones, crater lakes, hot springs and waterfalls. These volcanoes broke out twice in hundreds of years. Now it is sleeping and in its dormancy. Near Baitou peak, the leftover 72 pools are called Longtan pools, which are extinguished craters. The biggest one is Tianchi lake. In the primeval forests north of the lake is a big hot spring group covering over 1,000 square kilometers .

Besides the endless green forests, Mt. Changbai is also famous for rich ginseng, marten and piles antler. With other hundreds of Chinese herbs, it also gains the reputation of Mountain of Herbs. Deep in the mountain, various kinds of wild animals and bird live freely here.

The most famous scenic area in Changbaishan is Baitoushan (White Head Mountain) and Tianchi (Lake of Heaven), a 2 million year old volcanic crate lake at the mountain summit. Tianchi has a circumference of 13km (8 miles) and has an average depth of 204 meters (670ft). Surrounded by beautiful mountains, hot springs and waterfalls this area is considered sacred by both Koreans and Manchus.

Tianchi Lake

The volcanic Tianchi (Heavenly) Lake, 10 square km in area and 204 meters in average depth (373 meters at the deepest), marks the boundary of China and Korea on the top of Baitou Mountain, the main peak of Changbei Mountains. Skirted on all sides by mountains, the lake is known for its sublime natural beauty.

Changbai Mountains Nature Reserve

Covering a total area of 2,000 square km, Changbai Mountains Nature Reserve is, as a mammoth natural zoo and botanical garden, part of the UNESCO'S Man and Biosphere Program. The Tianchi Lake, Vertical Scenery, Aerial Park, hot springs, and waterfalls are among the six local natural wonders. The mountains, covered with primitive forests, make an excellent bio-tour destination.

Tianchi Lake
With a circumference around 13 km, Tianchi is in the shape of ellipse with 200m deep in average. It is said that it is as deep as 373m in the center. Surrounded by 16 hills, Tianchi is like a piece of jade embedded in the mountains. Besides water, only huge rocks can be seen in the surrounding of Tianchi.

However it is always talked that monsters were playing in the lake. So scientists spent a lot time in making observation. What they found was only a bear bathing at edge of the lake, no other animals. They even tested water several times. But the test can only result in no creature in water. No creature in water, how can monsters live and what they eat?

Water overflows from a breach of Tianchi lake and runs over 1000m away, then falls down cliff and forms the great famous waterfall. It can be heard 200 miles away and has great view. The fallen water runs into Songhuajiang River, and becomes the source of Songhuajiang River. There are many waterfalls in the district, high and low, big and small. Not far from the great waterfall, there is a hot water group, spreading over 1,000 square meters bubbling out water from the ground.

The most beautiful part of Changbai Mountain is undoubtedly Tianchi, or Heavenly Lake. The lake was formed in the crater of Changbai Mountain, and it is the source of the Songhua, Tumen and Yalu Rivers. Changbai Mountain is also the cradle of Manchu, Korean and Han nationalities. The altitude of the Heavenly Lake is 2,189 meters (about 7,182 ft), and so the average temperature is 7.3C (45.14 F). With clouds everywhere, Heavenly Lake is like a jade in the sky. You can find a very interesting phenomenon while walking along the Heavenly Lake. On many occasions it is common for sunshine and rain to occur at the same time. It may rain very hard one minute, but you may soon find the sun shining warmly the next minute. Sometimes, you can even watch it rain in the west and shine in the east. Besides the wonderful scenery and astonishing climate, many witnesses have claimed that there are monsters in the lake! Some witnesses even took photos as proof, but there is still no conclusive evidence.

To the north of Heavenly Lake there exists an exit for the Chengcha River. Running gently for about 1,200 meters (0.74 miles), the river suddenly becomes a churning rapids and drops from a 68 meters (223 ft) high cliff. This is the famous Changbai Waterfall, the highest volcanic waterfall in the world. Watching it from far away, the waterfall appears like a white ribbon suspended in midair. As you approach it, you can hear the loud roar and feel the chilliness of the waterfall. Another alternative to watch the waterfall is climbing to Heifengkou on the main peak of Changbai Mountain. Gales blow ceaselessly in this col, making it hard for visitors to walk and climb. But it remains the best place to watch the panorama of the waterfall. Apart from Changbai Waterfall, more than ten smaller waterfalls are also available in Changbai Mountain. Visitors have to enter the Northern Slope Entrance to see the Changbai Waterfall.

Less than 2 kilometers (1.24 miles) away from Changbai Waterfall lie the Changbai Hot Springs. With a special chemical composition inside, the rocks around the hot springs have been dyed many bright colors. Most of the hot springs have temperatures over 60 C (140 F); the highest is 82 C (179.6 F). Hot Spring Eggs have become a special local product. Visitors can bathe in the hot springs, which are very effective for some ailments, such as arthritis, dermatosis and exhaustion.

Underground Forest, the attraction with lowest altitude in Changbai Mountain, is famous for its view of virgin forests. Ancient tall trees, huge rocks, special animals and cliffy canyons have lured many scientists, explorers and photographers in recent years. Twin Lakes and Natural Museum along the Northern Slope are also worth visiting. Additionally, the newly exploited Great Valley, Jinjiang Waterfall, King's Lake, Tiger's Back and Tizi River in the Western Slope also attract many visitors. If visitors want to closely observe the borders of the PRC and the DPRK and enjoy the beautiful alpine flowers, they can climb Changbai Mountain through the Southern Slope Entrance.

During the peak seasons, namely June through September, hundreds of flowers blossom on the Southern and Western slopes. It is very cool in Changbai Mountain, so it's an ideal place for escaping from the summer heat. But it is also very rainy in July and August, and visitors cannot watch the Heavenly Lake clearly at that time. The best time to visit Changbai Mountain is September. Generally, it snows from October. The best time to view snow and to ski is from November to March. Ice and snow begin to thaw from April, but visitors can still find snow even in May.
