Nanjing is a good place to see a bit of Chinese history and culture away from the tourist route; the city is littered with cultural relics, museums and nice scenery and is small enough to get around in a short period of time. For those living or staying in Shanghai, Nanjing makes a nice alternative destination for a weekend vacation.

Nanjing, the capital of ten periods in Chinese history, is a city famed for its rich culture, long history and beautiful landscape.

  •  Qinhuai River 
    The Qinhuai River, a branch of lower Yangtze River, is the "mother river" to the Nanjing people. The river breaks into two branches called Internal Qinhuai River and External Qinhuai River.
  •  Nanjing Museum 
    The Nanjing Museum, located inside the Zhongshan Gate of Nanjing, is a complex of buildings that is modeled after Liao dynasty palace. There are 400,000 artifacts in the museum's various collections, some of which are very precious to China's history such as the set of jade suit sewed with silver thread.
  •  Confufius Temple (Fuzimiao)
    The Confucius Temple, located on the north bank of the Qinhuai River, was originally erected during the Song Dynasty. All around the temple there are numerous souvenir shops, snack bars, restaurants and entertainment venues housed in Ming and Qing dynasty architecture.
  •  Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum New!
            Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum 
    Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum, located in the Zhong Mountain Scenic Area in the east Nanjing city suburbs, covers an area of 80,000 square meters (about 20 acres).
  •  Purple Mountain Observatory (Zijinshan Observatory) 
    The Purple Mountain Observatory, located on Tianbo Peak of east Zijinshan (purple Mountain), is the first modern observatory in China. It was built in 1928 with the Zijinshan Observatory of China Academy of Sciences built later.


 Famous Historic and Culture Sites:

Among the many protected cultural relics and sites in Nanjing, one has been inscribed on the World Heritage List, 14 are protected at the national level and 135 at the provincial level. As a result, three cultures with distinctive characteristics may be witnessed in Nanjing: the culture of the Six Dynasties, the culture of the Ming Dynasty, the culture of the Republic of China.

Suzhou is located in the south of Jiangsu province, some 50 miles west of Shanghai, along the old Grand Canal. The city has been famous for its gardens for many centuries. Numerous inscribed boards, couplets, engraved bricks and ancient paintings can be found in Yangzhou.
