Chengdu is a transportation hub in south-West China. The Shuangliu International Airport, one of the seven largest airports in the country, is linked with other airports via 60 national flight routes, 5 international and regional routes and 12 charter routes. The Chengdu North Railway Station is the sole special-grade station in southwest China. Baoji-Chengdu, Chengdu-Chongqing, Chengdu-Kunming and Chengdu-Daxian lines meet here. The station handles 30 pairs of trains a day, including three pairs of excursion trains. The highways link every village. Some of the five expressways have been completed, and the others are under construction. They are from Changdu to Chongqing, Mianyang, Leshan, Nanchong and Ya'an.

Expressway

The two expressways linking Chengdu and other places that have been completed are the Chengdu-Chongqing line and Chengdu-Mianyang line. Another three expressways-Chengdu-Leshan, Chengdu-Nanchong, and Chengdu-Ya'an lines-are now under construction.

 

River Wharves

The Funan River, also called the Jinjiang River, consists of the Fuhe River and Nanhe River which pass through the urban area of Chengdu. It is the golden waterway leading to other places and the lifeline of the city's economic and cultural formation, development and prosperity. In 1992, Chengdu invested 2.7 billion yuan in comprehensive treatment of the river, therefore, greatly improving the outlook of Chengdu. The anti-flooding and sewage discharging capacity was improved. The river was reopened to shipping. There are 13 wharves on the river, a sightseeing shipping company equipped with two 40-star motor-driven cruise boats, four 40-star power-driven cruise boats and eight speedboats is operating on the river.

 

Railway Station and Excursion Trains

The Chengdu North Railway Station is the sole special-grade station in southwest China, located at where Baoji-Chengdu, Chengdu-Chongqing, Chengdu-Dunming and Chengdu-Daxian lines meet. The station handles 30 pairs of trains a day, including three pairs of excursion trains (Y207/208 between Chengdu and Guangyuan, Y217/218 between Chengdu and Chongqing, and Y227/228 between Chengdu and Yibin). The daily passenger flow amounts to some 50,000 and daily luggage handling capacity stands at 12,000 pieces. The station handles an annual passenger flow of near 8 million. It was nominated as the "unit guaranteeing safety and good services" by the Ministry of Railway and has kept up the honorary title of "civilized unit" for 11 years.

 

By Taxi
Chengdu has created hundreds of new taxi stands in its streets. The stands are approximately two meters (78.7 feet) high, with a green ginkgo leaf shaped board on a blue Y-shaped support. The signs are written in both Chinese and English.Taxi fare is CNY 5 for the first 3 kilometers and CNY 1.4 per every succeeding kilometer from 6:00 to 22:00. At night from 22:00 to 6:00 next morning, the taxi fee is CNY 6 for the first 3 kilometers and CNY 1.7 per every succeeding kilometer. Chengdu taxi drivers are said to be 'living maps'. They can give helpful suggestions on where to have dinner and to have fun in Chengdu.

By Bus
Chengdu's public bus services extend in all directions. You can get to most of places, especially sights inside the city, by bus. Common public buses charge CNY 1, while buses with air-conditioning charge CNY 2. Take small change as there are no conductors on many of the buses.

By Sight-seeing Bus

The newly-operated sight-seeing buses No.901 and No.902 are really good choices for touring the city. The routes cover most of the famous tourist attractions of Chengdu and are considered convenient by most tourists.

No.901 double-decker roofless sight-seeing bus departs every 30 minutes.

The stewards on the sight-seeing buses will introduce the passing tourist attractions in both Chinese and English. In addition, there are multimedia systems of mobile TV sets, tourist film players, isochronous broadcasters with four foreign languages of English, French, Korean and Japanese, etc. to facilitate foreigners.

Gathering within the First Ring Road, especially in the center of Chengdu, the pedicab has been a typical feature of the city. Drivers wear uniforms with identifying cards. The charge starts from CNY 5. You can bargain.

Rental
Despite traffic considerations, Chengdu welcomes private cars. Car rental is an option if you did not join a package tour

There are 108 Taxi companies in Chengdu which are equipped with a total of 6,290 vehicles in some 10 models, including Alto, Jetta, Daewoo, Cherade, Audi, Citron and Benz. The annual handling capacity of passengers has reached 127 million. The taxi drivers are highly qualified and have high moral standards.

Traffic Leading to Major Tourist Resorts of the Province

All roads linking Chengdu and main scenic spots within the province have concrete or bituminous surface. The roads from Chengdu to 10 tourist resorts in Dujiangyan, Qingcheng Mountain, Xiling Snow Mountain, Longmen Mountain, Tiantai Mountain, Jiulonggou, Chaoyang Lake, Yunding, Wujin and Huanglongxi are wide and provided with standard toilets. Regular excursion bus services to cities of Dujiangyan, Ya'an, Emei, Wutong, Nanchong, Suining and Kangding are also available in Chengdu.

 

Chengdu Passenger Transport Center

The center, located by the south side of the New Nanmen Bridge, has a beautiful environment and provides excellent services. It has put more than 200 high and medium-grade excursion vehicles into operation with transportation lines radiated across the province. The daily scheduled runs top 500, handling some 10,000 passengers. It is the largest high way transport hub under the planning of the Ministry of Communications.
In order to meet the needs of the tourist markets, the center will gradually be built into a super tour market with first-class facilities, management and service and having the functions of providing tour transport, information and shopping.
