Accessibility to the City

In recent years, the civil aviation department and government of Dunhuang City invested more than 45 million yuan in reconstructing runway of Dunhuang airfield, widening Dunqi and Dunyue roads and the ring road in southeast of the city, constructing a road to Jade Gate Pass, repairing the roads to all the scenic spots, putting special trains from Urumqi to Liuyua in peak touring period into use, opening new airlines for chartered flight from Dunhuang to the cities of Beijing, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Urumqi and Yinchuan, and adding regular buses to nearby places and places of Lanzhou, Wuwei, Jinchang, Zhangye, Jiuquan, Hami, Germu and Urumqi. Two lines of buses and all kinds of vehicles make the road traffic extend in all directions. More than 700 taxis, 1000 rickshaws and 11 taxi parking points offer passengers a great convenience for traveling.

Domestic and International Airlines and Airport

Dunhuang airport is located 13 km east of Dunhuang. It was built and put into use on July 15, 1982, and has now developed into a small airfield, which can fly through 9 airlines and has 96 staff and workers. The volume of passengers increased rapidly after reparation in 1997 and reached 95,091 in 1998.

Domestic and International Airlines and Airfield

The charter flight airlines of Dunhuang-Jiayuguan-Lanzhou-Xi'an-Beijing have already been in service. The touring airlines for charter flights of Dunhuang-Lan-  Zhou-Beijing, Dunhuang-Xi'an and Dunhuang-Jiayugauang-Xi'an will open in peak period. Charter flights can also be added during this period. According to flight schedule, the booking office of the civil aviation department arranges special buses to carry passengers to and from the airfield. There are lots of taxis for passengers to take.
For the volume increase of the passengers, the National General Office of Civil Aviation and the government of Gansu Province decided to enlarge the airfield in latter half year of 1999, without affecting its regular operations. The enlarged airfield will greet foreign and domestic passengers with its new appearance and high-graded, efficient and quick service.

The Railway Station & Special Trains for Tourism

Without a railway, Dunhuang has to rely on Liuyuan Railway Station to evacuate passengers. The station locates in Anxi county, which is 128 kilometers away to the north of Dunhuang. 16 trains pass there everyday directly to the cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Zhengzhou, Xi'an, Chengdu, Lanzhou, Jiayuguan, Hami, Tulufan, Kurle, Shanshan, Urumqi, Akesu, etc. in peak period, the station can not only add carriages to the trains, but also open new special trains for tourism on line Liuyuan-Hami-ulufan-Kurle-Shanshan-Urumqi and "Jiugang" special touring train on line Yumen-Jiayuguan-Jiuquan. Buses and taxis carry passengers out of or to the station day and night.

High-grade Highways

The net of highways extends in all directions. It meets Andun highway to northeast and Liudun highway to northwest, connects No.312 national highway at Anxi and Liuzhou, and leads to the cities of Jiayuguan, Lanzhou, Xi'an, Hami, Tulufan, Urumqi, etc. Extending southward, Liudun highway meets No.215 and 109 national highways, which leads to Germu of Qinghai Province and Lhasa of Tibet respectively. They are lifelines for entrance to Qinghai and Tibet before Xi'an-Germu railway opens. As the straight and wide asphalt roads within Dunhuang leads to all scenic spots, the traffic becomes very convenient.

1. Buses
The Motor Transport Company of Dunhuang City is in charge of buses, and arranges medium-buses on the fixed lines in the city. Business time: 7:00-222:00

2. Taxis
Altogether 709 taxis, various types of bus, medium-bus, minibus, Santana, Xiali and Audi park in 7 places in the city. Taxis can be obtained day and night at airfield, bus stops, hotels, scenic spots and amusement places. The taxi rent is calculated over 2 kilometers. The current starting price is 5 yuan for a mini car and 10 yuan for a common car. When surpassed, passengers will be charged 1.1 yuan per kilometer. The starting price for a standard car is 10 yuan. Passengers are charged 1.2 yuan per kilometer for extra distance.
3. Rickshaw
There are more than 1000 rickshaws running through streets and alleys in the city. They are easy to take because they can be called anytime and anywhere. The starting rent is 1 yuan per kilometer.
4. Bikes for rent
If tourists want to travel on bike, they can rent them at 4 points on Mingshan Street of the city. Rent can be discussed face to face. Usually it is calculated according to time.
5. Cars and Buses for rent
If the tourists team or individual tourist traveling in Dunhuang want to rent luxurious air-conditioned touring buses, please contact the local travel services or chief counter of a hotel of star-class. (The contact telephone numbers are on the column "tour service".) If want to rent domestically made buses, please contact the motor passenger transportation companies (centers). The rent can be discussed face to face.

Traffic to Main Scenic Spots

The scenic spots locate near to each other. Except for Mingsha Mountain, Crescent Moon Spring and Sanwei Fairyland, other scenic spots do not need special tour lines. The environmental-protected cars run from Mountain Gate to Crescent Moon Spring in Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring scenic area. There run tour buses on special line Mogao Grottoes to Guanyin Well in Sanwei Fairyland. All the scenic spots are on or near the three main selected lines. The first is Stone Hole artistic travel line: downtown-Mogao Grottoes-Sanwei Fairyland-Mingsha Mountain and Crescent Moon Spring. The second is Guanxi ancient city travel line: downtown-Baima tower-Dunhuang park-Xiqianfodong caves-Old City of Dunhuang-Yangguan Pass-Wowa Pond-Desert Forest Park-Han Great Wall-Jade Gate Pass. Because there are too much scenic spots on the three lines, in order to make it convenient for the tourists to select the destination, the travel services and traveling motor company provide special buses for the tourist teams. Taxi drivers mainly serve the individual tourist. The parking points can be found at bus stops, hotels and main streets. Passengers can choose traffic vehicles freely and quickly.

Dunhuang Airport Transportation

Dunhaung is a small city, tourists can get everywhere inside the city on foot, its small area however, brims with famous sights and key points of interest. There is also an efficient tourist transportation system with small vehicles in the city.

Taxi

It is very convenient and easy for tourists to take a taxi. There are many taxies driving around the city, or parked at the airport, bus station, hotels and historic sights etc. The flag-down-rates of taxies are range from RMB 5 to 10 according to the different taxi types. Beyond the first 2 kilometers (about 1.2 miles), the extra fee will be charged which is about RMB 1 for mini taxies and RMB 1.2 for a sedan. Tourists may take a taxi to Echoing-Sand Mountain (about RMB 10 and RMB 20 for round trip), which is 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) away from downtown Dunhuang. Generally, tourists travel to sights of interest by taxi or minibus, the fair is negotiable, which will be reasonable. You can hire the taxi for the day to visit Mogao Caves, Echoing-Sand Mountain and Crescent Lake, the cost (including the waiting time and parking) in total is about RMB 100 to 120 for a sedan.

Bus

Buses in Dunhuang City are mostly of a medium size running along fixed routes in the downtown area; and operate between the hours from 7:00 until 22:00. There are three bus routes from Dunhuang City into the countryside heading in three different directions. With departures every 15 minutes costing RMB 1 for the through trip, bus No. 3 will take you to Echoing-Sand Mountain

Jinrikisha

Such vehicles run through the streets and lanes making your trip flexible and convenient. Generally, RMB 1 for 1 kilometer (about 0.6 miles).

Bicycle rental
On Mingshan Road, there are several rental services, the fee can be negotiated, generally RMB 1 per hour.
