white-glazed jar with carved designs
The paste surface is coated with refined white clay, while paintings of entwining peonies cover the jar body.

When potters created this jar centuries ago, they removed the white clay from the jar, except for the flower designs, exposing the grayish brown paste. After finishing the product, potters covered the whole piece with a light vitreous (glasslike) glaze, the designs showing in relief. Originally, the flowers were pure white and vivid and the background was brown, presenting a strong contrast in color. The style of painting was bold and unrestrained, striving to capture the theme, while a few strokes brought the motif to life.

A covered jar of white glaze with black designs, a vase of white glaze with a carved design of twin tigers, and a white-glazed headrest with a lion in black show strong color contrast and original composition. These and the masterpieces mentioned in the previous two paragraphs exemplify the historical decorative art of Cizhou ware.

The traditional porcelain firing techniques of the Cizhou Kiln has radiated to form a circle of porcelain culture, including folk customs, oral literature, and kiln architectural art, etc, around the local trading areas. At its peak, Pengcheng Town held more than 20templefairs every year, leaving behind rich trading conventions, folktales, farming work proverbs, and a lot ofcalligraphyand paintings made on household utensils.

The Cizhou Kiln is second to none and has a unique style among the numerous kilns. The artist paints on the porcelain with small scenic pictures in a simple, free, vivid and bold style. It garnered fame both at home and abroad, and had a lasting influence on successive kilns. The masterpieces it produces exemplify the historical decorative art of Cizhou porcelain. Archaeological investigations have discovered Cizhou porcelains spread out over a large area -- far beyond the confines of ancient Cizhou.

China Cizhou Kiln Museum opened

The China Cizhou Kiln museum, one of the largest theme museums in China, was recently opened. The museum, covering an area of around 5,000 square meters, houses over 14,000 rare works of arts, including nearly 10 thousand Cizhou Kilns, remaining in the lead in both quantity and artistic value in China.

The Cizhou Kiln is the well-known folk kiln in old Northern China. It ranks up there with the Ding kiln and Xing kiln as the three famous kilns in Hebei.

Wang Huiying, an analyst at Cizhou Kiln Museum, claims the Cizhou kiln was established about 2,000 years ago.

"The Cizhou kilns had started producing porcelain since the Northern dynasty. They were the earliest blue porcelain kilns in north China. The early products were few in variety and simple in design."

The products made in Cizhou were mostly for people's daily use, such as bowls, vats, pillows and vases. And the porcelain production in Cizhou area flourished between the Song and Yuan dynasties. Wang Huiying adds that the porcelain produced in Cizhou kiln had distinctive characteristics.

"Chinese traditional painting skills were adopted in decorating the porcelain articles, and were mainly painted in black and white so as to achieve the strongest possible contrast in colors. In addition to poems and essays, the motifs on the porcelain articles included natural creatures such as birds, beasts, fish and aquatic weeds. The unique color paintings on the porcelain articles were of epoch-making importance in China's porcelain producing history."

Different decorating skills were developed throughout the long history of porcelain production.

"As the porcelain articles discovered so far have attested, a total of 63 decorating skills are used in the porcelain decoration, including brushing, painting, incising, embossing, color printing and so on."

During its most prosperous period, porcelain produced in Cizhou kiln was so widely collected both at home and abroad that it was found in the sunken ships in East and Southeast Asia sea areas.

Among all the pieces produced in Cizhou kiln, a vase called 'Mei Ping' or 'Plum Blossom Vase' stood out, Wang Huiying says.

"The plum blossom vase has a small mouth which can only allow one branch of plum blossom, and therefore it got its name. It was originally designed as a wine container. Because of its rich decoration and artistic shape, it was later used for decorative display."

Different from porcelain kilns in other areas of China, the kilns in Cizhou were mostly in the shape of a bun, and therefore were called 'bun kilns'. Porcelain was burnt in these kilns at temperatures of 1,200 degrees Celsius for three days to complete over 70 steps of the production process. Apart from typical black and white porcelain, there were many other glaze colors such as yellow, brown and green.

After over 1,000 years of development, Cizhou kiln porcelain production gradually declined during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Few workshops are still producing porcelain pieces nowadays. Resident Fan Yunbiao grew up during the decline of local porcelain production.

"The Cizhou kiln is very famous in Hebei province. When I was young, almost every family had several porcelain pieces. We used the porcelain pillows during summers. But after mid 1980s, the articles became less popular. Now only the kilns in Fengfeng mining area are producing porcelain."

In Guantai county of Cizhou, large numbers of bun kiln relics were discovered in the 1980s and over 300,000 porcelain pieces were unearthed. People can take a good look at them and enjoy the charm of the delicate art in the Cizhou Kiln Museum. They can also witness firsthand some of the ancient techniques used to produce the beautiful works of art. Du Yanqing is impressed by the exhibits after visiting the museum.

"After visiting the museum, I have got a deeper understanding of China's porcelain culture. The articles produced here are all of high quality and artistic value. And the designs are really unique."

While the porcelain of Jingdezhen is still enjoying great popularity, the Cizhou Kiln porcelains are not so well recognized by people due to a lack of promotion.

Along with the Cizhou Kiln Museum, the local government is making every effort to introduce its culture to more people and ensure that the fantastic ancient art will soon be revived.
