Shanghai Ocean Aquarium Covering

Shanghai Ocean AquariumShanghai Ocean Aquarium was opened in 2002 at the cost of US$55m and is one of the largest aquariums in Asia. It is a world-level high-tech tourist project. Covering a total area of 22,400 square meters, Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is located in Pudong's Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone. With a theme of "Across Continents -Through Worlds of Water,"

The aquarium gives visitors the opportunity to become familiar with some of the world's aquatic animals which can be found in 28 exhibition zones containing over 300 species of rare aquatic animals.

The aquarium also has a 155-meter submarine tunnel to enable visitors see the aquatic animals at close range.

For visitors to SOA, your fascinating "round the world" underwater journey begins from the Yangtze River in China, then on to the mysterious flooded forest of the Amazon in South America. Next you will find yourselves at the mangroves and billabongs of Australia. You will then meander through the rivers of Africa before arriving at the rainforests of Southeast Asia. Brave the cold as you go through the icy waters of the Antarctic. The last leg of your journey will take you from the sandy shores to the depths of the ocean.

Shanghai Ocean Aquarium is the only aquarium in the world which has
a separate China Zone to display endangered Chinese aquatic animals.
Exhibit species include e.g. the Chinese Sturgeon, Chinese Suckerfish,
Yangtze Alligator and Chinese Giant Salamander.

The Amazon River of South America is 6,480 kilometers in length and has the
most number of tropical fresh water fish species in any river of the world.
It also contains some of the world's largest aquatic animals. It is also sur-
rounded by the largest tropical rain forest in the world.

There are around 190 species of fresh water fish in Australia and most of them cannot be found in any other country in the world. This is because millions of year ago the Australian continent has been separated from other land masses, thus the fishes living there could not crossbreed with the fishes from other continents. This has led to the development of unique species and characteristics of Australian fresh water fish.

Africa has rich water resources including the Nile River, Congo River and the Great Rift Valley Lakes with many species of fish. The Cichlid is the most famous species in Lake Victoria, Lake Tanganyika and Lake Malawi. The lakes were formed 500 thousand to 2 millions years ago. After so many years of evolution, the fishes here have adapted themselves perfectly to the water world.

The Cold Water Zone is made up of one single display tank that houses our spotted seals. The half-arch shape of this acrylic tank is another unique design in our aquarium, and enables visitors to observe the spotted seals from an underwater viewing environment

With the cold icy wind blowing across your face as you climb over the white-snow-
covered mountains by sledge, you know you have arrived at the Antarctica Zone to
meet our cute and cuddly Humboldt penguins.

This display contains an astonishing variety of marine species, many of them very colorful and each with their own unique characteristics. Among them you will find the Horseshoe Crab also known as a "Living Fossil", the shy but beautiful Leafy and Weedy Sea Dragons, Japanese Spider Crabs -the largest of all crustaceans, and the Seahorse - one of the most unusual looking fish in the ocean.

Beyond the coastline, beyond the bays, and beyond the reefs, is the open ocean.
This is where the pelagic predators swim.
