Suzhou, famous for its beautiful landscape gardens with exquisite architecture, is an extremely popular tourist destination. It has convenient modern transportation facilities. You can get there by train, airplanes or bus.
Despite being an important tourist destination, Suzhou does not have its own international airport at present. It is best to use the airports of nearby Shanghai. Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA) and Pudong International Airport (PVG) are used frequently by domestic and international visitors.
Hongqiao Airport (SHA) is 86 kilometers (about 53 miles) away from Suzhou. Every day shuttle buses run between SHA and Suzhou. The whole journey takes about one hour and forty minutes.
Buses from SHA to Suzhou:
Time of departure: The buses depart from SHA on the hour from 10:00 to 16:00 every day. Also, two buses leave SHA at 17:30 and 19:00.

First, take the bus to SHA, and then take the No.1 shuttle bus from SHA to PVG. The price is 30 Yuan per person.
Time of departure for the No. 1 shuttle bus: every 10 minutes from 6:00 am to 9:00 pm
Lastly, for the visitors to or from Beijing and Foshan (in Guangdong Province), the Guangfu Airport, located in the west suburb of Suzhou, has direct flights every week.

Almost all the trains running on the Hu-Ning (Shanghai-Nanjing) Railway stop at the Suzhou Railway Station. Suzhou is the terminus and starting station for five trains to and from Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Ganzhou (Jiangxi Province) everyday. The rest of the trains are bound for Shanghai from Beijing, Chengdu, Xian, Qingdao, Xining and Nanjing, etc., but stop in Suzhou. Usually, at least two trains to Shanghai stop in Suzhou each hour. The trains which go direct to Suzhou from Shanghai depart Shanghai at 6:30 and 16:41 everyday. The return trains depart at 7:13 and 17:09.

China's Grand Canal, which reaches north to Tong County in Beijing as well as south to Jiaxing City and Hangzhou City of Zhejiang Province, passes by Suzhou and has been an important means of water transportation for a long time. At present, the water route from Suzhou to Hangzhou is open. Everyday, four luxury passenger ships travel between Suzhou and Hangzhou, two in each direction. Departure time is 17:30. The journey takes about fourteen hours. You must board the ship half an hour before it leaves.
From Suzhou to Hangzhou: No.8, Renmin Lu, Nanmen Dock.
From Hangzhou to Suzhou: No.138, Huancheng Beilu, Wulinmen Dock.
Bus Routes in Suzhou: You can take the No.1, 7, 101, 102, 13, 14, 16 or 28 buses to get to Renmin Bridge.
Fare: The ticket fare depends on the type of ship you are taking. The price for double rooms ranges from 95Yuan to 150Yuan per person. Triple rooms range from 78Yuan to 98Yuan. Usually, you can buy a ticket two hours before leaving. In the peak season of tourism, it's better to have a reservation.

By Long-distance Bus
Suzhou is known as the 'Southeast Gate' to Shanghai and Zhejiang Province because of its well-developed highway network. Three long-distance bus stations are in use in Suzhou nowadays. The Suzhou North Bus Station has the most bus routes to Anhui, Hubei, Fujian, Shandong, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang provinces. Buses also depart for Shanghai from the North Bus Station once every twenty minutes. The ticket fare varies from 26 Yuan to 30 Yuan.
North Station: No.29, Xihui Lu. Located at the east of Suzhou Railway Station.
South Station: Located at the corner of Nanhuan Eastern Road and Yingchun Road. Take the No.10, 931, 54, or 55 buses to get there.
Buses going to Anhui, Hubei, Shandong, Jiangxi, and Zhejiang provinces plus Shanghai are available here.
West Station: Jinshan Road, New District. The No.313, 39, 302, 317, or 622 buses will take you to West Station. Buses to Anhui and Zhejiang provinces and Shanghai depart from here.

Like other tourist cities in China, Suzhou has a convenient public transport system. Most of the buses running in the city only take exact change so make sure you have some small coins before getting on. The price of regular buses is 1Yuan per person. You can easily hail metered taxis in Suzhou. During the day, the first three kilometers (about 1.9 miles) is 10 Yuan and then 1.8 Yuan for every succeeding kilometer (about 0.6 mile) after three kilometers. After five kilometers (about 2.7 miles), 50% of the price is added to the passenger fee. Each five-minute or more waiting time is added as one extra kilometer to the passenger fee. Late at night (after 23:00), the price is 13 Yuan for the first three kilometers and 12 Yuan for each additional kilometer.
Suzhou is the classic Chinese water town and many points of interest are located on narrow streets and alleyways where it is difficult for a bus or a taxi to pass through. Don't worry. The rickshaws in Suzhou will make your journey more convenient. The starting price of a rickshaw is CNY2 per person and then CNY4 for every additional kilometer. If you want to hire a rickshaw, the price is CNY5 per person for an hour.
The bicycle is the most popular vehicle in China. If you want to enjoy more of the water town by yourself, why not rent a bicycle. Most of the stores that rent bicycles for visitors are located east of Suzhou Railway Station. Generally, the price is CNY2 for four hours, CNY3 for five to six hours, and CNY5 for the whole day.
Tip: If you want to rent a bicycle, you'll need to leave a deposit and show your identity card.
