The Southern Mosque, located in downtown Urumqi, is an important historical site. It has been the center of Muslim worship since it was built in 1919 and then renovated on three separate occasions. Covering an area of about one acre, the mosque accommodates 1,100 Muslims.
The Mosque's unique architecture is best reflected by the tower, the bathing pool, the guest reception hall and the prayer hall. The prayer hall is especially interesting because its roof is covered in glazed tiles in colorful pictures of flowers and plants. The prayer hall can hold 300 people. There are 22 flying dragons carved on the side of the building. The walls of the corridor are decorated with brilliantly colored drawings of orchids, waterlilies and bamboos.
