Located at the foot of the snow-capped Tianshan Mountain Range, Urmuqi is the capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest of China. The place became known to foreign visitors mainly for its role as the last stopover along the" Silk Road".
Urumqi is located in the temperate zone and has a continental climate. The average annual temperature is 6.4 centigrade and the precipitation averages 236 mm yearly and is a semi arid area. Urumqi has four distinctive seasons, with the hottest time being July and August while coldest time is January . A feature of the climate is the great difference in temperature between daytime and night. A coat or sweater is needed during night even in the sweltering hot summer. The best time to travel the region is from May to October.
Urumqi is a multi-national city, where 43 ethnic groups reside. The city's rich cultural diversity is demonstrated by many ethnic minorities in the area. Han, Uygur, Hui, Kazak, Manchu, Sala and Mongolian people are all represented in this culturally diverse region.
As you might expect from the biggest city in the old Silk Road lands of Xinjiang, shopping is good in Urumqi, whether it's carpets, knives and spices in a Uighur bazaar or electronics and brand-name fashions from the east of China, you can generally find it somewhere.
Red Hill at the city center is the symbol of Urumqi and a unique and spectacular part of the Urumqi landscape. The hill is made up of impressive red rocks. It stretches 1.5 kilometers from east to west and is 1 kilometer wide.
Heavenly Lake: Nestling high in the Tianshan Mountain, 115 kilometers west of Urumqi, the superlative beautiful Tianchi Lake lies 1980 meters above sea level and is hemmed in by the towering snow-capped Bagda Peak.
South Pasture is located 60 kilometers away from Urumqi city which is about, about 2 hours drive. It is a vast natural area with fascinating scenery.
Xinjiang Museum presents a wonderful collection of items from the local area as well as items from other areas on the ancient Silk Road. It has a large collection of silk items from many periods of history.
Erdaoqiao Market is the largest retail and wholesale market for ethnic minority goods in Xinjiang. Night scene at the market is especially interesting. The whole area is lit up with colorful lights creating a very impressive scene.
In Urumqi, there are ten ethnic minorities practicing Islam. It boasts 263 mosques now. The famous ones include Tartar Mosque and Southern Mosque. Tartar mosque is the center for peaceful Islamic activities in Urumqi City. And Southern Mosque is an important historic heritage site. This center of Moslem worship was built in 1919 and subsequently renovated on three different occasions.
