                                                 Bei Pagoda

The Haibao Pagoda or Sea Treasure Pagoda ( Haibao ta ), also known as the North Pagoda ( Bei ta ), is located a short walk from the old sector ( Laocheng ) of the city. The temple was originally built in the 5th century, although it was toppled by an earthquake in 1739 and rebuilt in its original style in 1771. The temple and pagoda are of the most famous in Ningxia, and as such will be crowded on the first and fifteenth day of the Chinese Lunar calendar month.

Haibao Pagoda in Yinchuan, popularly named as Bei (north) Pagoda, was built in the fifth century. This pagoda is built in a temple and has its own special architecture style. It stands on a big stone base. The whole structure is built with bricks. Inside the pagoda, a wood staircase winds to the top for tourist to enjoy the distant view.

The pagoda is 54 meters high, has eleven storeys and a delicate, exquisite, and clear-cut view. All these features are rarely seen in ancient Chinese pagodas.

From the top of the Haibao Pagoda visitors are given fine views southwards, across the town to the winding Yellow River ( Huang he ) beyond, and eastwards, towards the Helan Mountain ranges.

There is a square chamber on each floor which is encircled by a wooden stairs winding up from below. The molding decreases by fifteen to twenty centimeters from the base upwards, storey by storey. The top of the pagoda has a distinctive shape, for it looks like a peach made up with green colored glaze bricks. This color is in sharp contrast to the grey body, which contributes to what we might call the Pagoda's civility and liveliness. From the top, it is possible to see the Yellow River (Huanghe) away to the east, while to the west the majesty of Helan Moutain can be enjoyed. The view is comparable in beauty with any of the delicate scenery in South China. No wonder the pagoda is regarded as the symbol of Yinchuan City.
