What's the Best Time to Visit China?

China is a year-round destination

China's geographic area is slightly larger with a continental and seasonal climate. Most parts are in the temperate zone; but southern areas are in the tropical or subtropical zone ; and northern areas are in the Frigid Zone. Climates in different areas of China are complicated.

From ice festivals in the north to tropical beach resorts in the south, China's such a vast and diverse place that you're sure to find great things to do and amazing places to be no matter when or where you go. For example, if you don't like Beijing in January, hop on a plane to the beaches of Sanya, semi-tropical Guangzhou, the jungles of southern Yunnan or temperate Hong Kong. Or make the best of the cold by hitting the ski slopes in Sichuan or Heilongjiang and visiting the famous Harbin Ice Festival.

The ideal months to Visit China

There are indeed high and low seasons. If your itinerary takes you north, whether you're following the Silk Road or delving into imperial history in Beijing and Xi'an, you'd better be off in fall or spring, when it’s neither too hot nor too cold and skies are at their clearest. If you're headed to Tibet, late summer and early fall are best. Yunnan's Kunming, known as the "City of Eternal Spring," is, as advertised, pleasant year round. If you have a thing against crowds, China's packed eastern provinces may not be your cup of tea at any time of year, but you'll definitely want to steer clear of the two Golden Weeks, when Chinese travel en masse, cramming into planes and trains (and driving prices up). The Golden Weeks take place during Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), which varies depending on the Chinese lunar calendar and following the October 1st National Day holiday.

The months of April, May, September and October are ideal months for travel anywhere in the country. In the north, the winters are cold, and summers are warm, with moist monsoon air streams making it hot (80% of China's rainfall occurs between late May and early October, mostly in the Southern regions). June through August is a good time to visit central and northern China. Spring and autumn are the best months for travel in Southern China. The months of March and April are the lower-priced shoulder season; while the lowest price, off-season travel, is from November through the winter months. This is when adventuresome travelers are rewarded with unbelievably low prices and far fewer fellow tourists.

Decide the time you want to visit China by your own

May, September and October are the peak tourist months at China's most popular destinations when the weather is most comfortable, but prices are higher, and everywhere is more crowded. Prices drop a bit in the shoulder season, which runs from late March through April and from June through August. The low season arrives in late November, and continues through the winter when there are fewer crowds and the prices are lower.

Deciding when to chinauniquetour.com  depends on which places you wish to visit, what type of weather you enjoy, and how much a bargain you want. With so much variation, it's best to get a clear idea of where you want to go in China and plan accordingly.

  • Spring: 10-22C, Western suits, jackets, sports coats, woolen jackets, long sleeve shirts and travel shoes.

  • Summer: 22C and above, T-shirts, short sleeve shirts, skirts, sandals, caps, rain wear.

  • Autumn: 10-22C, Western suits, jackets, sports coats, light woolen sweaters, rain wear and travel shoes.

  • Winter: 10C or lower, overcoat, cotton clothes, lined coats. In very cold areas a cap, gloves and cotton-padded shoes are required.
